Yumi contemplated the various souvenirs for sale at the Joyland pop-up booth. None of them appealed to her sense of aesthetic, but at least they seemed well-made, between the fine quality of the materials and the brightness of the colors.[break][break]

She thought about buying one, but the sense of someone approaching prompted her to glance over her shoulder instead. Her expression brightened at once, recognition entering her eyes.[break][break]

"Oh! There you are," she said as her lips twisted into her trademark amused smirk.[break][break]

THEO BECKETT might remember it, though the last time they had seen each other was when Yumi was much younger. As a representative of Team Rocket, he'd visited the Hasegawa estate a few times to conduct business with her grandfather.[break][break]

But they had never spoken at length, not even during the first year of her stay in Hoenn. Perhaps he was simply too busy with the demands and responsibilities of an underboss. So when he'd reached out to reconnect at the carnival, she'd been very surprised indeed.[break][break]

None of it showed on Yumi's face at that moment, however. She stepped away from the souvenir booth to greet him properly, extending a hand for him to shake. "It's been a long time, Mr. Beckett. How have you been?"

"I like it here," Yumi said without hesitation. "It's different, new. Exciting things happen all the time."[break][break]

She knew how casual she must have sounded, speaking of war and apocalypses with such an understatement. But she had not witnessed them herself firsthand, nor suffered as the others had in the dream of Galar.[break][break]

"I've made a number of friends and business connections since arriving, too."[break][break]

Yumi paused then, realizing a busy man such as THEO BECKETT might not have full awareness of her story. "I assume you already heard a thing or two from my family as to why I'm here at all."[break][break]

Or perhaps not. Just because her family worked with Team Rocket did not mean an underboss of the crime syndicate all the way in Hoenn knew about her exile.

this, of course, is not always feasible. people do slip through. but his connection with the hasegawa family is what keeps him aware.

Yumi scoffed, her face scrunching up at such a biased reporting of events. "I was standing my ground," she insisted, crossing her arms over her chest in defiance.[break][break]

A gaggle of children ran by them, laughing and screaming about some carnival ride. Remembering they were in public, she lowered her arms to her sides.[break][break]

"My father wanted me to marry his business partner, a much older man. I refused," she explained to Theo. "They couldn't handle the thought of me having my own mind, so they kicked me out."[break][break]

Seized with a sudden restlessness, she gestured down the main boulevard lined with games and attractions. "Should we walk and talk?"

Yumi glanced up at Theo, surprised to hear those words coming from an associate of her father and grandfather. She had assumed all men of authority were the same control freaks, especially men of Team Rocket. Perhaps she'd been too quick to judge.[break][break]

As they walked, Yumi shook her head. "Not in particular. I've been to the carnival already, in another city."[break][break]

She smiled then, a touch of well-trained elegance entering her expression.[break][break]

"Since you suggested meeting here, I think it's fair to consider you the host, and let you decide how we fill our time." Then, quickly, she added with a laugh, "As long as it's nothing humiliating like tug-of-war or the Tauros rodeo game."

[attr="class","beckmain"]it may be odd for some to realize but theo is no control freak. as rocket's underboss, he seeks to delegate as much as he can, which then allows him to invest his time in more worthwhile activities.

"i know the perfect activity."

like the magikarp fishing game he leads them to.

it does not take long before he's settled into his familiar spot. the rods are already set up all along the pond, allowing people to simply sit, wait, enjoy before they get an eventual bite.

until then, they're free to talk.

The more time Yumi spent around Theo, the more he surprised her. Magikarp fishing was not even on the list of activities she expected him to enjoy. Perhaps letting go of her expectations entirely was the best angle of approach for the Rocket underboss.[break][break]

Sitting next to him, she cast her line and waited for the bite. The shout of a vendor selling SLOWPOKE TAILS caught her attention, but she watched him pass without calling him over.[break][break]

Patience was not exactly her best virtue, unfortunately, and she was grateful when Theo spoke up, even if the question was not exactly her favorite.[break][break]

Yumi hesitated for a moment before replying, "I suppose I do. It's strange to have everything familiar be ripped away from you in the course of a single night. I didn't get to say any proper goodbyes."[break][break]

No goodbyes, no closure.

Yumi's reply was instant. "Not who, but what."[break][break]

A Magikarp approached her bait to inspect it with its mouth. She watched, her body tense with anticipation, and mentally willed the fish to bite. But it swam away instead, disinterested.[break][break]

The woman relaxed into her seat, sighing. "I didn't leave any people behind who I particularly missed," she admitted. "The only person I cared about came with me to Hoenn, anyway."[break][break]

Her family were the villains, after all, and she had not had the distinct pleasure of making friends during her childhood years.[break][break]

On the opposite side of the thoroughfare, a puppeteer mimicked MEGA EVOLUTION, to the delight of several children watching him. Their awed exclamations drifted to Yumi's ears, causing her to regard them for a moment.[break][break]

Finally, she turned back to Theo. "But I wish I had a chance to say goodbye to my childhood house, to the familiar shops I frequented as a child, and to the river that runs through my old neighborhood."[break][break]

A slight frown creased her brow.[break][break]

"Those are things that should still be in my life, but aren't." She glanced at the underboss as a new thought wormed its way into her mind. "Do you have anything like that, Mr. Beckett?"

kanto, johto, even in hoenn, he has found them here. of course, there are sentiments and memories attached to them—those can't be replaced—but he does not value them much.

Yumi considered Theo's words. She knew he was right; ultimately, detachment from the world and all the material things within it provided an advantage. A house, shops, a river—all these things existed in Hoenn, just as they did in Kanto.[break][break]

But they weren't the same houses, shops, or rivers. One set represented a life torn from her, a life that had been her birthright.[break][break]

Yumi had always been an entitled brat.[break][break]

"You're right, of course," she said, however. "There's no use feeling nostalgia for things that exist out of our control. I'm here now. And I like to think I've done well despite the setbacks."[break][break]

She smiled, back to her usual self.[break][break]

"Have you had a chance to visit the casino since its grand reopening?"[break][break]

A Magikarp in the artificial pond bit Theo's hook, tugging hard.

"You should come by sometime and enjoy the VIP perks," Yumi suggested.[break][break]

She watched Theo wrestle with the stubborn Magikarp for a moment until he successfully reeled it in. The carnie assigned to the fishing game appeared at his side in an instant, confirming his catch and offering him one of the many mundane carnival prizes.[break][break]

"Congratulations, Mr. Beckett," Yumi said, amusement in her eyes. Then she pivoted to answer his question. "I'd like to start my own fashion line. I've been taking classes and am designing my first collection to pitch to stores in Slateport City."[break][break]

If Theo thought that plan wasn't ambitious or criminal enough, she didn't care. She had her heart set on it.[break][break]

Hoping that their fishing excursion was over, Yumi reeled in her line and handed the rod to a nearby child. Ignoring their confused expression, she stood and smoothed the nonexistent wrinkles from her skirt.
